Bridging the gap

A report published by Learning and Teaching Scotland on 18 June, entitled 'Bridging the Gap', states that outcomes for young people improve when positive partnerships are fostered between schools and youth work.

Bernard McLeary, Chief Executive of Learning and Teaching Scotland, said: 'Youth work provides opportunities for young people to develop personally through community-based activities, and recognises, celebrates and builds on their achievements. As the implementation of Curriculum for Excellence moves forward, we need to continue to develop and strengthen the links between our schools and the other learning providers that give Scotland’s young people access to more choices and opportunities.'

Curriculum for Excellence acknowledges the importance of developing partnerships between schools and youth work in the personal development of young people. Youth workers and other partners play a key role in ensuring that young people are given the best possible choices and opportunities. Keith Brown, Minister for Schools and Skills, said: 'Youth work strategies are never more important than at this exciting time for learning and teaching. It is important that young people should be given support at every
stage through school and on into work. Youth work can ease these transitions, while at the same time continuing to encourage our young people to become confident individuals, responsible citizens, effective contributors and successful learners.'
